Beloved Flower Lover,
She knew Stocks were her favourite summer flower. So when she got the call from out the blue, she decided to allow herself to step outside her comfort zone and bring her some Stock flowers. A little online research revealed the following about the highly fragrant and gorgeous flower.
Stock Fact Sheet
Stock flower (commonly called Gillyflower) and botanically called Matthiola incana is highly fragrant and stunningly beautiful.
What does the stock look like?
They are clusters of round double flowers, which form a spike at the top of each stem. They come in white, pink, purple, red and yellow.
When can you get them?
The fragrant Stock is available during their peak season which is between March and August.
Where can you buy or get them from?
Streetmarkets, as well as florists, supermarkets and garden centres. Or your own garden or your neighbours!
What do you do when you get them?
Condition them. If you get them from a florist remove the flower food. You will be using that later. If not remove all the leaves from below the water level. Cut the stems on a slant with knife or scissors and place them in a clean vase with fresh water and flower food. Now step back and smile. That last step is mandatory!
Stock are named after Italian botanist Pietro Andrea Mattiol, and if you look at their leaves you might notice a similarity to the cabbage family. Yes, they are related. They are also known as gillyflower.
