Beloved Flower Lover,
The annual Winter Solstice is coming up in December!
It’s December 21st-23rd in fact and its a surprise to many of our colleagues that we close up for that period. In fact we close up from December 18th- Jan 6th each year. We do so that we can adhere to the quietening energy of nature at this time. We ignore the external distractions and almost ‘hibernate’. Surprised? What do you do this time?
This is not new. Yet we do see the mass consumerism going on, yet we ignore it becuase we know it’s the perfect time to be getting quieter, not busier.
It’s like a massive secret, or the ‘elephant in the room, that people know about, but do not in some odd way. Some choose to rush around, some choose to slow down and recoup their energies. We know what group we are in.
We are often surprised that a modern nation like ours does not practice more quiet time at this time of year. It would so help for the coming year . Yes we want to see the beauty of flowers all around but not at the expense of one’s life force. No, that’s setting yourself up for being erratic next year. And especially as women, our energies need the deep rest so we can be prepared to bring gorgeous ‘flowers and fruits’ forward into next year.
When you look around at modern day cultures, in Africa, or Asia like Japan, or European like the celtics cultures, we notice that their respect towards their connections with ancient traditions that respected the ‘earth’, can still be celebrated in today’s Winter Solstice.
It’s in fact a time to be as still as possible to allow the mind and body to rest and restore itself for next spring’s growth. Sleep more, eat less, be with loved ones, turn off distractions and dream more. So that’s what we do. We love to flow with nature, because it’s our nature also!
The surprise to many is that we really do apply this approach to floristry. We don’t just talk about it. We focus on how, what the chinese call ‘life force’,Qi, or Chi, can direct our floral works.
It provides us with a harmonisation framework. An approach to commerce that is linked with blessing people at a deep level. Thta’s how we approach floral gifting. That’s why we end up talking about peace, joy and all those other harmony emotions as we consider our floral designs.
These ‘life force’ principles are core to our work with lillies, roses, grasses, calla’s, sunflowers, orchids and more!
We make plans at that time of year to be quiet, really quiet, even silent, so we can reflect on the beauty of nature. To calmly, peacefully sit in awe of nature. To recognise it in ourselves and others and our floral products. We watch nature just go about it’s cycle of recreation and regeneration without any help from mankind.
We smile as despite society worries, fear, gloom, grief, sadness, and anger we can actually choose to fill ourselves with the truth of nature’s laws. The laws that keep seeing the sun and the moon move without our help. We smile as we find ourselves with another opportunity, each day to experience peace, love and joy, and to share it. Yes, we smile and give thanks.
We give thanks for nature.
We give thanks for being able to create feelings like Peace, Joy, Unity, Balance, Justice, Love, Freedom, Choice, within our Imaginations. We give thanks that we can be the experience of our thoughts and feelings first, through cultivating them in the fertile soil of our being.
That’s what we do as florists. That’s what we share with you. We take the time to embrace this during what we call this ‘bridge time’. We love how flowers can help us to radiate high energies of peace and joy at this time.
Yep, it’s truly the thoughts that count. Because energy flows where our thoughts go. And at this point, we can only see how flowers help to eliminate stress from our lives. And better still, to direct us to feelings of peace and joy.
We would love to find out what surprises you at this time of year and how you might be using flowers or anything else to remind you of the beauty of this time of year.
Peace and many blessings to you all
